About Naneghat

Naneghat is a historic mountain pass located in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, India. It has both historical and natural significance, making it a popular destination for trekking enthusiasts and history buffs.

The trek to Naneghat offers a moderate level of difficulty and takes approximately 3-4 hours to complete. The starting point of the trek is the village of Vaishakhare, which is accessible by road from Junnar or Kalyan.

As you ascend the trail, you will be greeted with scenic views of the surrounding valleys and lush greenery. The path is well-marked, and you will come across steps, rocky patches, and some flat stretches along the way.

Naneghat is renowned for its ancient trade route that connected the western coast of India with the Deccan plateau. The pass served as a crucial trade route during the Satavahana period (2nd century BCE to 2nd century CE). Traders used this route to transport goods like horses, spices, and precious metals.

Upon reaching the top, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the Sahyadri mountain range. The highlight of Naneghat is the cave complex, consisting of several Buddhist caves carved into the rock face. These caves feature intricate carvings, inscriptions, and remnants of ancient architecture.

The main cave, known as the Naneghat cave, is the largest and most prominent. It has a prayer hall and a water cistern, showcasing the architectural brilliance of the era. The caves provide a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of the region.

During the monsoon season, Naneghat transforms into a paradise with lush green vegetation and numerous waterfalls cascading down the mountains. The weather can be unpredictable, so it is advisable to check the forecast and carry rain gear. 2 Naneghat is not only a trekking destination but also a place to connect with history and appreciate the natural beauty of the Sahyadri Mountains.
